What's with the need for new pencils even if you have a billion half used ones at home? My family loves schools supplies...new fresh stuff. Kevin becomes one big make believe student this time each year. He is like a kid in the candy store at Staples. Sunday I asked him, after lunch, if we could stop into Staples for a notebook. It was a stupid question! He fully supported my need for a notebook for taking notes at church, and I am sure it wasn't because he wanted to support my spiritual growth at that moment. We had to walk every aisle, even the aisles where we surely couldn't afford a thing on the shelf. Kevin came home with graph paper, a graph notebook, and a "church note taking" notebook as well. He had a gratifying smile on when we left. I loved it.
Getting prepared for school this year has been hard for me. As you know if you have been reading my blog recently, I had a hard time getting Cory ready. I didn't get to buy the fun stuff like school supplies and new shoes. I had to buy the items to set up a home away from home. He has 20+ pairs of shoes, and adequate school supplies so I wasn't able to generate the excitement that comes with the analogy of sending a "child" off to school. (By the way, his apt is very well set up and he is enjoying his new living space...and yes he has been in school 2 weeks and I have been there 3 times...official business of course...he needs a lunch out, right? I know I am bad.)
If you been reading my blog for a long time, you know my son, Tim. We have "Tim" issues in this house, but we love him "Timendously"! There is never much fanfare for preparing him for school. He never looked forward to the first day of school. He was happy with the clothes he had and I usually had to force him to go get a few new things. He loves new shoes but he orders his on line on the computer. I usually buy his school supplies. So the traditional prep I did with Cory was non-existent most years. This year, however, my Tim allowed me to take him shopping for clothes, and a new backpack. I use the word shopping loosely because he shops like my friend Deanna. We are here to buy what's on the list and we do it quickly. I of course chose Asheville to shop so we could pick up Cory and he could drive us around for the cost of supper. Lol! We had a great time believe it or not shopping with Tim. I barred him from shopping at Hot Topic a dark, eerie store. We hit all the trendy shops and large department stores...NADA..Nothing but one shirt was found. So I gave in and was going to buy him 1 shirt from the "barred" store. It was a concert shirt. While I was in their asking forgiveness for stepping foot in the store, and praying for safety from the evil images leaping from the shirts, I found a clearance rack with decent graphics and for $6. We walked out with 3. I can't win with that child...at least not that battle.
The night before school Tim finally decides he needs school supplies. It is 9:00pm on Monday night. He never wanted to shop for them before. I direct him to my newly organized office supply closet. He found most everything he needed. He announced that we have a mini Staples in our house. He was actually excited shopping in the walk in closet of Kevin's joy! I have several colors of binders, notebooks, folders, index dividers, pens, paper, etc. HOWEVER, I did not have the right pencils.
Kevin and Tim went out last night to some local stores and found Tim his favorite mechanical pencils that he has used for years. Where? I never see them hit the paper but hey they are gone. Please pray for Tim. We spent some time with his school counselor and he has his work cut out for him to graduate high school. He truly seems positive and sincere in his efforts. Last night he DID home work and it was before midnight ! He did the homework in our living room and the contingency was do your homework and then we will watch a movie together. He did it and we 3 watch a movie. It was awesome, my friends!
I love school and often wish I could afford to go back and finish my degree in Sociology. I lack 3 semesters or X number of credits. I can't do that now but I live vicariously through the kids. This time of year my favorite things are thumbing through fresh sheets of paper, the sight of a fresh crayons in a yellow and green box and of course the fragrance of a freshly sharpened pencil!

I love this time of year, too! We had to put all the new stuff up high in the schoolroom because the girls "shopped".
